Depends on the subject, homeskillet! If I go straight to pens, I always put in dots where the corners of things should go, and then fill it in - makes perspective work much easier, and it's easy to catch mistakes early on. If I sketch in pencil first it's usually quite rough unless I know I won't be able to finish it until much later.
Alright, matey, that sounds good. I added you back. My recommendations would depend on what you want to draw! For people, I highly recommend Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life. I know it seems like a bummer to have to buy a book but it's not super expensive and it's way, way worth it. Buy it and just sit and work through it - trust me, it'll take awhile. If you're broke or just want online sources you should try Posemaniacs (http://www.posemaniacs.com/) and Pixelovely (http://www.pixelovely.com/gesture/figuredrawing.php). The best way to learn environments is to draw outside for awhile, or draw from photographs - same with objects. I'm still learning myself but the best thing I ever did was start calling my stuff "sketches" instead of "art" or "drawings." Takes the pressure off.
Awesome this all looks very helpful. Bookmarked everything! The library I work in has the book too so I will get it out first and see how it is :) I definitely want to draw everything! Life drawing, portraits, plenty of cats, etc. xD
Sweet! Yeah, when you work through the book, just start copying all of his drawings. You feel like you're cheating at first (don't trace, just copy), but eventually you'll notice you're getting better and slowly the things you're learning will work into your own style. Concentrate more on just filling up a sketchbook than comparing yourself to others and next thing you know you will be an expert!
